About

This blog is about the ancient land of Izumo and its surroundings – present, past and legendary. Izumo is in the west of Japan facing the Sea of Japan. It is home to Izumo-taisha, one of the holiest Shinto shrines and features locations in many of the foundational myths/legends of Japan, including the  “kunibiki” myth that this blog is named for.

Today Izumo is a mostly rural region and a total contrast to the urban bustle that most people think is Japan. It is a wonderful place to explore, filled as it is with beautiful scenery and ancient history, not to mention great food and relaxing hot springs
